Final Round
My dear friends,
I hope you’re all keeping well and living fabulously.
I’ve got some news about the future of this newsletter, but first I have some unfinished business to attend to.
Even though we are a full three months into the year of our lord Harry Styles 2021, I present to you numbers 7 - 1 of my top 10 crushes of 2020. I got SEVERE writer’s block with this post so in order to get it out the door I ended up writing just one or two sentences per section. Nevertheless, I really hope that the post will spark your interest in some of the shows, movies and singers mentioned - and if you do end up checking them out, please message me so we can talk about them!
7. Natasia Demetriou as Nadja and Harvey Guillén as Guillermo in What We Do in the Shadows
The best characters from the incredibly hilarious bisexual vampire show that I cannot believe you are not watching.
6. Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso in Ted Lasso / Rahul Kohli as Owen Sharma, Haunting of Bly Manor
Sexy mustachio-ed men with an innate kindness and a penchant for dad jokes.
5. Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent in Ted Lasso / Matt Ryan as John Constantine in Legends of Tomorrow
Two men with disparate careers (footballer and warlock, respectively) united by their working-class British roots, their intense grumpiness and the fact that I inexplicably really, really want to fuck them.
4. Alex Winter as William "Bill" S. Preston Esq. and Keanu Reeves as Theodore “Ted” Logan, Bill & Ted Face the Music
2020 saw the triumphant cinematic return of the original himbos, a little older but still just as hot. (Special shoutout to Samara Weaving and Bridgette Lundy-Paine for their pitch-perfect and equally crush-worthy performances as Bill & Ted Jr.)
3. Mawaan Rizwan in Taskmaster / Paul Williams in Taskmaster NZ
Mawaan “sneaky pasta snake” Rizwaan brought an a gorgeously cheeky and chaotic vibe (as well as genuinely incredible nail/outfit coordination) to Taskmaster season 10. Meanwhile Paul Williams killed his role as Taskmaster NZ’s Alex Horne equivalent. He is also only person I’ve crush blogged about who I have met - I can report he is handsome, funny and said nice things about Wellington. Love these boys.
2. Dev Patel as David Copperfield in The Personal History of David Copperfield
Dev Patel’s dreamiest role and that is truly saying something. His hair. HIS HAIR!!!
1. Jenny Lewis
A left-field choice, maybe. But honestly, no one got me through the heartache of 2020 like her. I laughed, I cried, I danced, I saw rainbows and stars to her music. Her poster hangs on my bedroom wall. Jenny Lewis, I love you.
Now, the news: this is the last edition of Crushed By An Angel. I’m pretty sad, but it feels like the right decision. Essentially, I’m not happy about the direction that Substack (the platform for this newsletter) is heading in. I’ve been getting bad vibes for a while and it has recently been reported that Substack has been giving large amounts of funding to prominent transphobic writers. So, after a bit of reflection, I’ve decided to end the newsletter on this platform. (However, I currently have no plans to delete this newsletter or The Indoor Crew’s archive, so if you’ve written a post for either, don’t worry about it suddenly disappearing.)
This isn’t the end of crush blogging for me. I still have many posts I want to write, which will happen in some form, in the nearish future. I’ve really enjoyed the newsletter format, and will look for similar platforms that better align with my values. Whatever I next create probably won’t be identical to this blog, but something a little more holistic, where I can write more broadly about my other interests as well.
Thanks so much for reading this newsletter and for your supportive comments. I truly appreciate you.
As a parting gift, here is my very favourite Jenny Lewis song - full of longing and heartache, and a little bit of magic.
‘Til next time,
L x
